Lets get serious for a moment. There are some startling facts about sun exposure and skin cancer. We all know and have heard the correlation between sun damage and melanoma yet we still see young children exposed in the heat of the day and the national mindset of a tan being healthy. So lets hear the facts:
- At least 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70.
- Over 400,000 Australians (more than 1,000 a day!) are treated for skin cancer each year.
- Research shows that sun exposure has been identified as the cause of 95% to 99% of skin cancers in Australia
- More people die from skin cancer than from road accidents in Australia
The solution is simple. Cover up, particularly in the heat of the day. Often sunscreen just doesn't cut the mustard, especially on those hot sweaty sandy beach days. Physical protection is always going to provide the best coverage, long sleeve rash vests and sun suits, big hats and umbrellas.
It certainly doesn't mean staying indoors, if anything being sun smart lets you stay outside longer as you don't overheat and feel like a dehydrated prune being baked in the sun. Its a great opportunity to show off your individuality too, find some bold prints and cool designs and own it. Have fun, stay cool and your future self will thank you for your beautiful skin.
